Blue Shield's In-Home Care Benefit

Blue Shield is excited to introduce Heal™, a service that lets PPO members see a doctor when and where they want without the stress of traveling to an appointment. That’s right — on-demand visits are available to a member’s home, office or hotel, and for most services the cost to see a doctor is the same as the member’s office visit copay.

This benefit is currently available to all Blue Shield PPO plan members, even those who purchased their plan through Covered California. Home physician visits with Heal doctors are available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and they currently serve the areas of San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County, Oakland, Berkeley, San Francisco, and the Peninsula to San Jose.

Continuing promotions to help enroll your clients

We are extending the “No DE9C” pilot program through June 2017 effective dates. To be eligible, the group must enroll at least 10 employees in medical coverage and submit the completed and signed Eligibility/Participation Attestation and the billing statement from the group’s prior carrier. All groups may also continue to take advantage of our relaxed participation guidelines through June effective dates, requiring only 25% employee participation (minimum of five enrolled employees for medical plans).

Use this new tool to help sell Trio Plans

The Trio Qualification tool is a quick, easy way to see if Blue Shield’s Trio ACO HMO plan is a good fit for your employer group. The new Trio tool can match the Trio service area to your client’s employee census. It even displays which medical groups would be assigned to employees based on their ZIP code.

Renewing your May and June Blue Shield clients

All second quarter group renewal kits are available for download from our Shield Renewals site. Member level changes for Q2 2017 clients can be made on Employer Connection Plus. May and June customers were mailed renewal kits at the end of February. Please contact Producer Services or your Blue Shield representative with questions.

Trio for Travelers

Our Trio plans fit nicely in a carry-on roller bag, and can go wherever our members go. With Trio, unlike non-Blue carriers’ narrow network plans, members have access to a national and worldwide provider network through BlueCard. For travelers with Trio, the only thing too narrow is the size of overhead bins.

Blue Shield Named One of the World's Most Ethical Companies

The Ethisphere Institute has named Blue Shield of California one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies for 2017. This is the fifth time Blue Shield has been named to this exclusive worldwide list. Ethisphere is a global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices.

This year the list includes 124 companies representing 52 industry sectors in 19 countries.

The World’s Most Ethical Companies program honors companies that excel in three areas – promoting ethical business standards and practices internally, enabling managers and employees to make good choices, and shaping future industry standards by introducing tomorrow’s best practices today.

Cal Index Becomes Manifest MedEx

In January, Cal INDEX announced that it is merging with the Inland Empire Health Information Exchange to create one of the nation’s most comprehensive health information exchanges (HIEs). Combined, they have insurance claims and medical records of more than 16.7 million people. The merger has recently closed and the new entity is called Manifest MedEx.

Claudia Williams, former White House technology senior adviser, will lead the new organization as CEO.

In 2014, Blue Shield of California and Anthem Blue Cross launched Cal INDEX to improve the quality of care and member experience by creating one source of integrated patient information. This ambitious project had a slow start due to the challenge of convincing health plans and medical providers to provide patient information and pay fees to access that data.

To move forward in providing access to appropriate care for our members, access to real-time patient information is imperative, and the scale of this merger provides more traction in creating a comprehensive digital patient record.
